Enters and updates patron records:

Searches patron database by name index to avoid duplication of records
Operates comfortably in a text-based or GUI environment
Verifies information; asks for further information if application is incomplete

Charges and discharges materials using automated library system:

Locates appropriate patron record
Has knowledge of local system's patron indexes and search commands
Recognizes and responds to system flags and prompts at any point in transaction
Performs overrides according to library policies
Has knowledge of manual back-up procedures in the event system goes down
Has ability to operate barcode reader
Circulates an item "on-the-fly" when no item record exists
Renews materials; alters renewed or standard due dates

Locates items using the staff OPAC:

Performs searches using various indexes
Identifies item status
Determines, if necessary, who has a particular item checked out, but maintains patron privacy

Follows procedures to request retrieval of items

Places holds as appropriate

Reports items missing as appropriate

Processes overdues:

Generates daily reports from automated system
Separates notices by degree of delinquency and patron type; refers severely delinquent patrons to supervisor
Searches stacks for "claims returned" items

Sells copycards and balances bank:

Has knowledge of card amounts and prices
Makes change accurately
Calculates discounts accurately
Records information accurately
Follows standard procedures to balance bank at end of shift

Responds to all patrons promptly, with respect and courtesy:

Possesses basic telephone skills
Answers simple directional questions
Takes messages accurately and delivers them in a timely manner
Maintains professional detachment and courteous demeanor when confronted by difficult situations or irritable patrons

Takes appropriate action within established policies and procedures when confronted with a problem

Refers complicated problems to supervisor quickly and appropriately

Opens and closes the library:

Has knowledge of intricacies of building layout, lighting and security systems
Logs various terminals on/off
Follows outlined schedule and lock/unlock procedures
Abides by library policies
Operates paging system to make closing announcement
