PROFESSOR AT LAW

Professor Weatherspoon has been a law professor at Capital University Law School since 1989 where he teaches Labor Law, Employment Law, Civil Rights, Employment Discrimination, Labor Arbitration, and a seminar on African-American Males and the Law. Professor Weatherspoon also teaches the following courses in the Graduate School of Management: Managing Diverse Workforce Within the Law and Managerial Mediation.

ADR Conference News

The 2007 conference was held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center and drew approximately 300 participants.

Plans for the 3rd National Training Institute of Minority Professionals in Alternative Dispute Resolution are being made. The 2008 conference will be held June 2-6, 2008.

EMPLOYMENT AND LABOR LAW

Professor Weatherspoon is recognized as one of the leading arbitrators and mediators in the country. He serves on a number of labor and employment panels, including the FMCS, the American Arbitration Association, the National Arbitration Forum, and the CPR. Professor Weatherspoon has served as a mediator/arbitrator in more than 400 workplace disputes. Recently he was a contributing editor to the leading book on labor arbitration, ELKOURI, HOW ARBITRATION WORKS; BNA, 6th ed., 2003.

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION: MEDIATION AND ARBITRATION

Prior to joining Capital University Law School, Professor Weatherspoon was the Director of Counseling, Mediation, and Settlement at TVA, a federal corporation where he supervised a staff of federal mediators. He received the Bronze Award from TVA for developing and implementing one of the first mediation programs in a federal agency for resolving workplace disputes. He presently serves on the Editorial Board of Conflict Resolution Quarterly and is the Director of Minority ADR Initiatives at Capital.

EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION

Professor Weatherspoon has extensive experience in the field of Employment Discrimination. He presently serves as a Mediator with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as an External Administrative Judge. Professor Weatherspoon is a frequent speaker at national conferences on topics related to EEO/Diversity. Professor Weatherspoon also conducts a 40-hour course on Mediating Employment Discrimination Disputes, as well as a series of seminars for managers on human resources and preventing discrimination in the workplace.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALES AND THE LAW

Outside the traditional law courses, Professor Weatherspoon also teaches a seminar on African-American Males and the Law. This is the first course taught at a law school specifically on how the justice system impacts African-American males. His book, AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALES AND THE LAW, covers such topics as racial profiling, employment discrimination, and sentencing. His law review articles on African-American males are cited extensively. Recently, he was re-appointed by the Governor to serve on The Ohio Commission on African-American Males.
