GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING AN ARTICLE

1. CONTENT

The objective of the Federalists' Paper is to provide a vehicle by which members of the Society and student body can discuss and debate issues. It is not our intent to personally attack those that oppose our views. Instead, the Federalists' Paper is intended to provide a forum by which topics can be discussed in a civil and intelligent manner.

2. TOPIC

All content, even if intended to be purely for entertainment, must be timely and substantive in nature. "Timely" implies that it is relevant and of interest to people now. If, for example, you oppose the decision in Roe v. Wade, a good time to write an article explaining judicial activism, state's rights, abortion, etc., is the anniversary of the decision, or when it comes to the forefront of the news. If you are interested in gun control, an appropriate time for commentary is immediately after school shootings. Because we are limited in how often we can publish the newsletter by money and time, let's try to make it as timely as possible.

3. STYLE

Articles are to be written in a professional and persuasive style. As this is a quasi-scholarly publication, some reference should be made to outside sources where available. As we are inviting dissent and debate, empirical evidence will make our arguments stronger and more persuasive. Keep in mind, some of those who dissent may be our faculty.

4. CITATION

There is no formal requirements for citation; i.e., do not worry about signals, short cites, etc. However, please make references to authority in the proper Blue Book form; i.e., if you are discussing a case, law review article, or book, give the cite in the format designated by the Blue Book.

5. LENGTH

Articles should be limited to 600 words. It will be difficult for anyone carrying a full load in law school to write more and even more difficult to keep the debate inviting for readers if articles are too verbose. However, exceptions will be made if necessary.

6. SUBMISSION

Please submit one (1) copy on paper and one (1) copy on disk (or e-mail it as an attached document) and put it in the mailbox of the senior editor. Microsoft Word is preferred, but we can import from other word processing programs.

7. GROUP COLUMN SUBMISSION (WALL OF SHAME)

Please submit one (1) copy of actual text as it originally appeared, where available, with reference to the source from which it was obtained.

8. DATE

First date of submission: All articles are due the 15th of each month during regular school semesters. Double-check with the editors as this may change.

ALL ARTICLES ARE SUBJECT TO REVIEW BY THE EDITORS OF THE FEDERALISTS' PAPER. THE EDITORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO NOT PUBLISH THAT WHICH IS NOT DEEMED TO BE OF THE QUALITY EXPECTED, OR IN THE FURTHERANCE OF THE GOALS AND REQUIREMENTS MENTIONED ABOVE.
