Biography
Professor Donald A. Hughes, Jr., was born and raised in Norwalk, Connecticut. He was graduated with the B.A. degree in 1974 from Hamilton College, where he majored in the classics. He continued his classical studies at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, which conferred on him its M.A. degree in Latin in 1978. He then attended law school at the University of Connecticut in West Hartford, where he decided to pursue a career in law librarianship. In May of 1981 he was graduated both from law school with the J.D. degree and from the library school at Southern Connecticut State with the M.L.S. degree. He sat for and passed the Connecticut bar examination in the summer of 1981 but was never admitted to practice in Connecticut, for by the time he was notified that he had passed, he had already changed his residence to accept his first professional position at the University of North Dakota School of Law in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
From 1981 to 1985, Professor Hughes was reference librarian and Head of Public Services at the University of North Dakota School of Law. In addition to his library duties at UND he also taught the first-year Legal Research course. In the summer of 1982 he passed the North Dakota bar examination and was admitted to practice in North Dakota in October of 1982. (He has since gone inactive.) In the fall of 1985 Professor Hughes moved from North Dakota to Columbus, Ohio, to accept the positions of Director of the Capital University Law Library and Assistant Professor of Law at Capital University Law School. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1989 and to (full) Professor in 1994. At Capital Professor Hughes regularly teaches Legal Research and Writing, Computer Law, Copyright Law, and a seminar in Law and Literature. From 1993 to 1996, Professor Hughes served as the Director of the Legal Research and Writing program at Capital.
